Born in Dar es Salaam in 1976, Lutengano Mwakisopile is self-taught visual artist who learnt how to draw and paint through participating in several technical art workshop, exhibition and residences both locally and internationally. Mwakisopile uses various media such as pencil, charcoal and paint on canvas, paper or woodcut engraving in his work.
The subject matter in Mwakisopile’s work is derived from his memories, experiences, hopes and aspirations using color, form and objects with the impressions of figurative pieces. His work depicts social caricature or political messages that are derived from daily life and occurrences and creating dialogue for his audience.
He began his journey as a fine artist and textile designer in 1992 when he joined Nyumba ya Sanaa Arts & Crafts Center and worked there for more than 10 years. Mwakisopile has exhibited his work both locally and internationally in Tanzania, Denmark, USA, Italy Canada, Norway, Kenya and Uganda.
He is a founder of Wasanii Visual Arts Company, a board member of Nafasi Art Space and Tanzania Federation of Crafts & Arts TAFCA. He is also a chairman of Fine Artists Association of Tanzania. He has also worked on commissions from numerous companies, NGOs, ministries, association and book publishers.
