Nafasi Art Space invites artists working with digital mediums to be part of a five-week residency, focusing on the challenges and possibilities of digital art and its place on the art scene. Aiming to provide a space for digital art in Tanzania, the program offers a unique opportunity for artists from the Continent to explore new ways of creating, distributing and presenting their works.

 

About

Correlating with the digital nature of the current decade, the scene for digital art has seen a steady increase in engagement from artists and audiences alike. Along with it, the types of media used are growing in numbers. Websites and social platforms such as Instagram have generated a large community and broadened the arena for digital art.

Playing into the discourse on high and low culture, the digital art scene has received critique for its use of technology, claiming its interference in authentic human craft. How can the digital art movement be reflected in – and made part of – greater art communities and crossover into physical spaces? This artist residency explores what digital art is and what it can be, in the context of an art centre. By opening up our studios to four digital artists, we seek to further the discussion on digital art and promote a greater understanding of how digital creators can interact with new audiences and find ways of distributing and selling their art.

We offer artists an opportunity to…

• Conduct five weeks of focused artistic work in our studios, nestled in the tranquil and creative environment of Nafasi.
• Interact with our member artists and become part of an extensive network of creators from all over the world.
• Develop their craft and evolve as creators through close consultation with our in house curator.
• Have their finished works exhibited at the art centre, as well as our digital gallery.
• Produce a selection of prints, which will be put up for sale to the artists’ advantage through the Nafasi Art Shop.

A stipend of 750,000 TZS (275 EUR) will be awarded to the selected artists

Logistics & provisions
We will admit four artists to our D.A.R program, two Tanzanian and two from other African countries. In order to enable more people to apply, we have adopted a flexible structure for the residency. The program sees that the Tanzanian based artists spend five weeks of the residency creating from a studio allocated at Nafasi Art Space in Mikocheni B, Dar es Salaam. The international artists are invited to join remotely from their respective homes, reinforcing the digital dimension of this residency. The local artists will have accommodation provided, but will be expected to cover their own transport to Dar es Salaam (if traveling from another region). All selected artists will be responsible for their own meals, transport, and other living expenses during the residency.

For our Digital Artist Residency we seek dedicated professionals who embrace our values and strive to learn and develop within their practice, while sharing their work and experience to contribute to an inspiring and culturally rich environment.

Wito Kwa Wasanii Wa Kidigitali

Nafasi Art Space inakaribisha wasanii wanaofanya kazi kwa njia za kidigitali kuwa sehemu ya makazi ya wiki tano, wakitathmini changamoto na uhusiano wa kidigitali na nafasi yake kwenye sanaa. Programu  itatoa fursa ya kipekee kwa wasanii wa ndani na wa kimataifa kutafuta njia mpya za kuunda, kusambaza na kuwasilisha kazi zao.

Kuhusu Programu

Kulingana na hali ya ukuaji wa kidigitali, eneo la sanaa za uoni limeonekana kuhusishwa kwa ukaribu na sanaa ya kidigitali kupitia wasanii pamoja na wadau mbalimbali walioweza kutambua zilizopo. Tovuti na mitandao ya kijamii kama vile Instagram imeweza kuhamasisha  jamii kubwa ya wasanii kutengeneza na kuonyesha sanaa za kidigitali. Je, harakati za sanaa za kidigitali zinawezaje kuonyeshwa na kufanywa sehemu ya – jamii kubwa za sanaa? 

Programu hii ya “residency’ kwa wasanii mwaka huu itachunguza sanaa ya kidigitali  ni nini na inawezaje kupata fursa katika kituo cha sanaa. Kwa kufungua studio zetu kwa wasanii wanne wa kidigitali, tunatafuta kuendeleza mjadala juu ya sanaa ya kidigitali, kukuza uelewa zaidi wa jinsi wachoraji wa sanaa hii wanaweza kushirikiana na hadhira mpya na kupata njia za kusambaza na kuuza sanaa zao.

• Kutengeneza kazi za sanaa kwa wiki tano katika studio zetu, zilizowekwa katika mazingira ya utulivu na ubunifu wa Nafasi.
• Kujichanganya na wasanii wetu wanachama na kuwa sehemu ya mtandao mkubwa wa wabunifu kutoka sehemu tofauti ulimwenguni
• Kuendeleza ujuzi wao na kukua zaidi kama waundaji kupitia ushauri wa karibu na wasanii/wabunifu wa ndani.
• Kazi zao zilizomalizika kufanyiwa maonyesho ya sanaa pamoja na kuuza kazi zao

Tunapokea maombi ya wasanii wanne kwenye programu yetu ya D.A.R, wawili wa kitanzania na wawili wa kimataifa. Ili kuwezesha watu wengi kutuma maombi. Programu itatoa fursa za studio kwa wasanii wa kitanzania kutumia kwa wiki tano za “residency” hapa Nafasi Art Space pia tunapenda kuwakaribisha wasanii walioko nje ya Tanzania kujiunga nasi kutokea nchi zao. 

Wasanii wa hapa nchini watapewa malazi, lakini watatarajiwa kugharamia usafiri wao kuja Dar es Salaam.  Wasanii wote waliochaguliwa watawajibika kugharamikia chakula chao na gharama zingine za kuishi wakati wa “residency”

Tunachotafuta
Nafasi Art Space  imekua ikijikita katika kuongeza fursa na kukuza  mtandao wa wabunifu na kuimarisha jamii ya wabunifu kupitia utoaji wa nafasi za wazi na kukaribisha wabunifu mbalimbali kua pamoja  Katika kuamini kuwa utofauti ni ufunguo wa ubadilishaji wenye athari nzuri, tunakaribisha wasanii wa kila kizazi na asili. 

Katika “residency” hii ya muda mfupi ya sanaa za kidigitali tunakaribisha wasanii wenye uthubutu, ambao wanakubali maadili yetu na wanahitaji kujifunza na kukuza tasnia yao, huku wakionyesha kazi zao na uzoefu wao  kuchangia kwenye kutengeneza mazingira yenye msukumo na kuongeza uthamani wa kazi za sanaa ya kidigitali
