Mwana hiti is a short documentary archiving and reflecting on Mwana hiti practices. Mwana hiti also known as Nya nhiti or Mwana nyang’iti is a fertility doll of the Zaramo, Zigua, Luguru, Kwere, and other matrilineal societies in Tanzania. The doll together with other objects and rituals has been used to initiate young girls into womanhood. Aunts and grandmothers famously known as Kungwi or Somo are key players in keeping this tradition which has evolved immensely.
For the screening, we aim to explore and spark dialogue about the intersection between traditional and modern ways of disseminating health information in the community and interrogate the pros and cons of each method and what as a community we can learn from them.
