DESCRIPTION:Nafasi Art Space is pleased to invite you to the exhibition Another Time\, an interactive Virtual Reality Exhibition of artists from 6 continents\, showcasing artwork made during a period of quarantine or self isolation. \nAll artists exhibiting in Another Time are part of the ‘Quarantine Residency’ project\, an experimental online residency program connecting artists and curators from around the world\, including Rebecca Yeong Ae Corey and Jesse Gerard as curators and Hussein Juma as one of the selected artists from Nafasi Art Space. \nThe VR exhibition can be accessed from 24 May on the website quarantineresidency.com. \nVirtual Exhibition \nThe exhibition shows works from 30 artists from 24 countries and six continents. They have been selected from a total of more than 600 artists from 82 countries\, who submitted more than 2000 artworks\, in media that ranged from painting and photography to installation\, new media and performance. The artists’ backgrounds and experience range from established professional artists who have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale\, to emerging and self-taught artists for whom this exhibition will be their first international exposure. \nThere will be both a VR exhibition and 2D virtual gallery space. The VR exhibition will allow people from around the world to interact with one another in the space\, creating a space ‘without borders’ for people to experience and discuss art.  The virtual gallery gives the audience the chance to see the artworks with a high resolution and read the stories and experiences of the artists. \nBeyond the Exhibition \nThe Quarantine Residency is an Online Artist Residency program. Selected artists participate in an online program of discussions\, critiques and artists talks. \nGallery exhibitions of the project will take place with our partners in Turkey\, Tanzania\, Indonesia\, Australia and China after the pandemic. \nThe QR team are also creating a “Quarantine Museum”\, a digital library of the thousands of artworks and experiences collected during this time. Although the applications for the Online Residency have closed\, applications for the Quarantine Museum will remain open.

DESCRIPTION:Raza Mohamed is a self-taught Postwar & Contemporary artist born August\, 1946 in Tabora\, Tanzania. He grew up around Tanga\, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar and was educated in Mombasa\, Kenya. He participated along the years to an impressive record of exhibitions in Kenya\, Nigeria\, USA\, Holland\, Denmark\, Germany plus numerous expositions in several international cultural centres across East Africa. Alongside other established painters like Professor Jengo\, their skill sits alongside Makonde and Tinga Tinga which are highly regarded Tanzanian creations.\nHe started sketching with charcoal in 1952. By the time he was a teenager he had already made up his mind. Art and painting was going to be his life. His efforts and talents are such that he has been nominated member of the art committee in the State House\, headed by Professor Elias Jengo. No wonder he was amongst founding members of Nyumba Ya Sanaa venue.\nWe are very happy to welcome such an incredibly talented and well established artist to Nafasi Art Space.

I’m mad. You’re mad.” \n“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice. \n“You must be\,” said the Cat\, “or you wouldn’t have come here.” \n― Lewis Carroll\, Alice in Wonderland \n“Those works created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses – where the worries of competition\, acclaim and social promotion do not interfere – are\, because of these very facts\, more precious than the productions of professionals…” \n— Jean Dubuffet\, who coined the term “Art Brut” (Raw Art\, in French). Art and Text no. 27 \nHadithi hadithi… hadithi njoo\, uongo njoo\, utamu kolea! \nStory\, story… Come\, story. Come\, embellishments. Let sweetness gather! \n― kiSwahili call-and-response refrain used in Tanzanian oral storytelling \nMzee Alphonce is known for his colourful tales\, full of jokes\, twists and plot holes big enough for an elephant to pass through. He tells a different version of every story each time he’s asked\, always with the same degree of conviction. When asked how he learned to make art\, Mzee Alphonce says “Hunger taught me.” No one is entirely sure where he was born\, or what his family history is. “Sina watoto\, sina mke\, sina mchumba\, sina nyumba. Lakini nina ubunifu\,” he says. “I don’t have children\, a wife\, a girlfriend\, or a house. But I have creativity.” Just like his stories\, Mzee Alphonce’s artworks are hyperbolic and theatrical\, embellished with unexpected and sometimes wild details.  \nMzee Alphonce uses art with a signature blend of humour and irony to magnify the absurdities and contradictions of life as well as global politics. In the same way that the best fantasy tales provide razor-sharp social commentary on the real world\, so too do Mzee Alphonce’s whimsical and exaggerated interpretations of fashion\, wildlife\, and humanity reflect a deep engagement with the world he lives in.  \nA metal garment with unattached zippers and patterned pants hanging down from it\, he says is a “kimini”\, a modern girl’s miniskirt\, and also a “kibwaya”\, or traditional grass skirt. While arguments and judgements abound on what constitutes “real” or authentic African culture\, Mzee Alphonce provides a futuristic alternative that claims both modern and ancient identities.  \nHis animal sculptures diverge from the depictions of animals commonly produced for tourist markets. They are one of a kind — he never repeats an animal — and each has a backstory and personality. “Tembo wa Kenya”\, for example\, is an elephant from Kenya. When asked why he would choose to make a Kenyan elephant rather than a Tanzanian one\, he mentions that he is often mistaken for being a Kenyan. So he insists this is a Kenyan elephant\, and makes fun of the idea that an animal (or person) would identify itself by national borders when these are often arbitrary or imposed distinctions. \nA dunce hat covered in a faded and fraying American flag and a crudely fashioned metal box with a shiny Red Cross hammered on the front are sideways glances at America’s faltering world power and the foreign aid industrial complex. The meanings of these works become more clear when understood in the context of Mzee Alphonce’s close attention to international affairs. His workshop space is filled with newspapers\, and he clips out and displays pictures of Donald Trump\, Boris Johnson\, and Kim Jong Un\, perhaps as a reminder of where the true insanity of the world lies. \nBecause he is old\, uneducated\, self-taught\, and underprivileged\, and because he makes art that he rarely sells\, Mzee Alphonce is seen by society at large and even other artists as eccentric at best\, but most often as mad. Yet as an “outsider” artist who creates art beyond the margins of polite society and an expert-policed industry\, his work contains an uninhibited force and immediacy that is unfiltered by either conformity or convention. \n“Curiouser and curiouser!” one might exclaim\, the more closely they examine Mzee Alphonce’s work. He exposes the fact that indeed\, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. The world we inhabit can be mystifying and bizarre. DESCRIPTION:THE FUSION BETWEEN ITALIAN AND TANZANIAN CULTURES\nWe are pleased to inform you that between the 23rd August and the 11th of September\, the Italian group “Uhuru Republic”\, in collaboration with Tanzanian musicians and artists\, will hold several live music performances and art events. As part of their “Uhuru Republic East Africa Tour”\, the group will hold training workshops in the disciplines of digital recording\, drawing\, painting and screen printing with art exhibitions at the end of the training sessions. \nThis international and interdisciplinary group intends to build\, through music\, art and images\, a form of universal music and art language\, to be appreciated and understood by a mixed audience. \nA brief outline of the events: \n23-24 August – Live performance\, DJ set\, digital recording and live painting workshops in Bagamoyo as part of the Ongala Music Festival \n26 – 30 August – Drawing and screen printing workshops at Nafasi Art Space \n31 August – Live performance and final art exhibition at Nafasi Art Space \n2-4-5- September – Digital Recording workshop and live performance at the Dhow Countries Music Academy  in Zanzibar \n11 September – Live performance at the Alliance Française in Nairobi together with Makadem \n \n

DESCRIPTION:In some African cultures\, a corpse cannot leave the house through the main door in fear that the spirit of the deceased will know how to get back into the house and haunt it. In other cultures\, it is a curse seeing your own face in your dreams and is a sure symbol of a near death. \nWe challenge artists to delve into the various rituals and taboos surrounding the living and the dead in our pan-african cultures. \nWhat messages and symbols still linger from our ancestors and what traditions are as buried as those who used to practice them? \n——- \nKatika baadhi ya tamaduni za Kiafrika\, maiti haiwezi kutoka nyumbani kupitia mlango wa mbele kwa hofu kwamba roho ya marehemu itajua jinsi ya kurudi nyumbani na kubakia.
