NAFASI IS A SPACE FOR LEARNING AND EXCHANGE – TO STIMULATE THE DISCOVERY AND PRODUCTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART IN TANZANIA

LEARNING & EXCHANGE

LEARNING

Nafasi is a space for critical learning that stimulates the discovery and production of contemporary art in Tanzania, through education and exchange between Tanzanian artists and the local, regional, and international art world.

Nafasi’s trainings, artist hangouts, and public art workshops encourage learning and exchange between artists from different backgrounds and across disciplines.

The greater goals of these activities are to help professionalize the artists and art industry, thereby contributing to human-centred economic growth and development by boosting employment, reducing poverty, and improving livelihoods.

CHAP CHAP | Public Art Workshops

Every last Saturday of the month we organize a public art workshop. We invite the public to participate in an interactive art activity related to an art technique, Nafasi exhibition, or artist in residence. Nafasi artists facilitate the event by showing and engaging the public in creating art using a specific technique or medium, such as water color, mural painting, sculpture, etc. During these afternoons, anyone young or old, can get a quick (chap chap) introduction to the different works and methods that contemporary artists use.

Chap Chap Workshops are often followed by public events such as concerts, festivals, and other performing arts, linking the artistic disciplines and strengthening collaborations between artists.  UPCOMING CHAP CHAP EVENTS

ART TALKS

At least once per month, Nafasi hosts artist hangouts (or Art Talks), which bring together artists from different backgrounds and across disciplines to meet and discuss important themes and topics. Nafasi artists use hangouts to present their work and projects, while Artists in Residence use them get to know the Nafasi community and share their work and ideas. We also use artist hangouts to discuss current exhibitions and events. The hangouts are a platform for artists to present and critique work and exchange ideas, plans, and inspiration with others.
