Job Title: Visual Arts Coordinator 

Nafasi Art Space is a cultural center for contemporary visual and performing arts in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Nafasi is a working ground for the arts, as well as a place for learning, exchange, and sharing artistic work with the public. 

Job Description

Nafasi is looking for a Visual Arts Programme Coordinator to begin working from 1 February 2022. We are seeking an energetic person to join our small but passionate team. The ideal candidate would be passionate arts advocate, hard worker and keen learner who will work with the Visual Arts Manager to ensure smooth implementation of all Visual Arts programmes and activities at Nafasi Art Space.


Purpose of role:  • Coordinate Nafasi’s core Visual Arts Programming 

such as Residencies, Workshops and Trainings 

• Create informational packs and tours for visitors and oversee key spaces of Visual arts activity such as the gallery, workshop areas, and academy. 

• Assist with facilitation and logistics of public events at Nafasi or partner events and outreaches outside the space.

and tasks:


• Contribute effectively to the designing, planning, budgeting, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting for visual art programmes at Nafasi 

Artist Members: 

• Help recruit new member artists (studio and general membership) and process membership applications. Meet regularly with current artist members, ensuring the Arts space rules and regulations are upheld 

• Assist the VA Manager with maintaining artist membership agreements, fees, and participation • Develop and organize the program for members, including training, workshops, exhibitions, etc. 

Program Management: 

• Coordinate the logistics of exhibitions, both onsite at Nafasi in the temporary exhibition hall and the permanent gallery, as well as off-site exhibitions with partner venues. 

• Coordinate the logistics of the Artist in Residence programme at Nafasi 

• Coordinate trainings and workshops in theory, technique, and entrepreneurship in the visual arts, sometimes with external partners 

• Help plan and coordinate monthly public art workshops 

• Schedule and coordinate conversations, introductions and networking events with artist members and visiting artists 

• Help plan and implement community outreach and engagement activities related to the visual arts 

Public Relations, Audience Development, and Marketing/Promotions: 

• Assist the VA Manager in coordinating Nafasi’s marketing and promotions for visual art activities and programmes to increase visibility and awareness of Nafasi, its members, and the visual arts in Tanzania 

• To assist the team in audience development initiatives 

• To build and maintain excellent relations with partners and donors in the art scene in Tanzania and abroad including identifying appropriate professional development opportunities for each individual.

Is committed to the development of diverse cultural practice by, for, and with young and emerging artists and community access to and participation in innovative cultural programmes and experiences. 

 – Arts/culture management experience or arts/culture education (Minimum of two years)

– Passion and commitment to promoting and supporting contemporary visual arts in East Africa

– Moderate knowledge of the local arts community and Tanzania art history. Interest and motivation for growth of said knowledge through self study

– Strong writing and communication skills in English or Kiswahili (fluency in both preferred)

– Tanzanian citizenship or permanent residence (no work/residence permit required) 


Job Location: Mikocheni B, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Period of contract: 1 years, with potential for renewal based on job performance (three month probationary period)
Expected start date: 1 February 2022
Hour/day requirements: Full time (9am – 5pm, Mon – Fri, plus Saturdays/evenings for special events) Remuneration: Commensurate with skills/experience
Reports to: Nafasi Academy Programme Manager
