Born in Dar es Salaam in 1976, Lutengano Mwakisopile is self-taught visual artist who learned to draw and paint through participating in several technical art workshops, exhibitions and residences both locally and internationally. Mwakisopile primarily creates works using acrylic and textile on canvas and woodcut engravings.
The subject matter in Mwakisopile’s work is derived from his memories, hopes and aspirations. The social caricatures and political messages in his work are drawn from daily experiences and observations, with which he hopes will motivate public discussion.
He began his journey as a fine artist and textile designer in 1992 when he joined Nyumba ya Sanaa and worked there for more than 10 years. Mwakisopile has exhibited his work in Tanzania, Denmark, USA, Italy, Canada, Norway, Kenya and Uganda.
He is a founder of Wasanii Visual Arts Company and member of Tanzania Federation of Crafts & Arts (TAFCA). He is also a chairman of Fine Artists Association of Tanzania. He has also worked on commissions from numerous companies, NGOs, ministries, association and book publishers.
Lute was a studio member of Nafasi from 2008-2018.
