Rebirth Exhibition

November had a beautiful beginning here at Nafasi Art Space as Mac Sawaya, our Artist in residence for August, finally held his long awaited exhibition. The exhibition was called rebirth and at opening time, the bare white walls of Nafasi Halls were not so much colored as flavored—adorned with a variety and depth of color that could almost be tasted. With over 30 years experience on the Tanzanian art scene Mac’s pieces showed a kind of easiness with tone, color and style that can only come with time; the paintings were alternately kinetic and still, angry and playful, introspective and shallow, but always unique and compassionate.

Among those who came out for the opening were a wide range artists including those whom Mac influenced such as Walter Simbo, and contemporaries such as Raza. Our marketing manager Agnes opened proceedings with a short speech before Mac himself said a few words about his art and shared a few gracious words about Nafasi.

There were over 19 paintings, and all who came out went home with something to think about.

A big thanks for all who came out to support and to Mac himself for sharing his time and talent with us. Rebirth is open 10am – 4pm Monday to Saturday until 1st of December.

All are welcome.
