NAFASI ART SPACE
Nafasi Art Space believes in furthering and enriching human potential through the medium of contemporary art. We are a vibrant art centre and platform for artistic exchange in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where contemporary visual artists and performing artists come together to create, learn, inspire, exhibit and perform.
WHAT WE DO
Nafasi Art Space hosts the Nafasi Academy for Contemporary Art, artist studios, and many active spaces and programmes for the creation and enjoyment of the arts. We offer regular artistic and public programmes including training and workshops, art talks, and public events, such as film screenings, exhibitions, concerts, festivals, and public art fairs. Nafasi also supports other artists and arts organisations across Tanzania via its FEEL FREE grant and incubation programme.
THE SPACE
Nafasi Art Space is home to some 20 studios, many converted from old shipping containers. Studios are used to paint, produce music, weave, weld, sculpt and more. We also have a children’s art space with weekly classes, an art library, 3 galleries of different sizes, a large outdoor performance space, a music rehearsal studio, and many other spaces for networking, learning, and creating.

To deepen our impact on creativity, education and connections for even more Tanzanian art and artists, we want to develop our creative infrastructure – starting with a shared workshop space for our Academy artist development programme and a Networking space with a shop, reception area, digital media lab, and co-working spaces. THE CONCEPT
Since it was founded in 2008, Nafasi has built, from the ground-up, a thriving artistic ecosystem of studios, exhibition and performance spaces, artworks, meeting and learning opportunities to inspire and support artists in Tanzania and to give audiences and art lovers a place to experience and appreciate arts and culture.
Meet a few of our past and present member artists and Academy students on the right. Some of our artists have studios at Nafasi, some join us for workshops and events, some are performers who use our space for training and rehearsals.

AN EVENT SPACE
Nafasi is not only a space for the creation of art, but also a platform to share it with the public. Nafasi events promote participation in culture, strengthen community and build a shared sense of cultural pride and identity.
