Jan van Esch is an artists, curator and cultural producer dedicated to social and intercultural community art-based programs. He combines an academic background in social and health science with his art practise.
From March 2011 till July 2016 he was the Managing Director of Nafasi Art Space. In this initial period of Nafasi, he created with his team the interdisciplinary combination of visual and performing arts that makes Nafasi such a vibrant player, and organised artist studios, workshops, residencies, curated exhibitions and public art events. As an artist and curator, he participated in exhibitions and events at among others the Alliance Française, National Museum of Tanzania and the Kampala Art Biennale.
Currently he lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin. In 2016/7 he was one of the artist-dis placement residents at arts and urbanistics center ZK/U, Berlin working as an independent artist at the Berlin Red Cross. In 2017/8 he was the curator and artistic lead for AFEW Culture Initiative (CI) an intersectoral arts and public health residency project for the 2018 International AIDS conference. Now he is a curator at ZK/U for Speisekino, a weekly spring and summer Cinema-Culinary-Art happening, and as an artist he is continuing his research on the concept of the gift and reciprocity.
